Abstract:  Materials engineering innovation and scaling in semiconductor is at the foundation of incredible breakthroughs turning future trends like AI, Big Data, autonomous vehicles, and the Internet of Everything into realities. There is an ever-increasing need for processing speed and memory capacity while reducing power consumption. Equally important, new material, process and integration engineering are needed to manipulate photons to achieve low loss, high resolution, and fast switching. In this seminar, I will discuss about how industrial-scale material engineering can help create new material solution and open opportunities in new photonics and display.

Biography: Dr. Mingwei Zhu received his B.S. in Physics from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Ph.D. in Physics from RPI. Dr. Zhu joined Applied Materials in 2010 and currently holds the position of R&D director and distinguished member of technical staff in the CTO office. His research interests include nitride material and devices, MEMS, photonics, quantum technologies, and advanced display.  Dr. Zhu has over 35 publications and holds more than 40 patents.
