CMDIS Facilities Open House 2023

During the Open House, you (or your researchers) can visit the Micro and NanoFabrication Cleanroom (MNCR), Nanoscale Characterization Core (NCC) and Polymer Processing and/or Characterization Core (PPCC) to learn about tools, instrumentation capabilities, fabrication and characterization techniques and requirements. (Undergraduate) The Hertz Fellowship
(Application deadline: 27.October)
The program provides financial and lifelong professional support for the nation’s most promising graduate students in science and technology. All eligible applicants must be college seniors, first-year graduate students, or in a gap year preparing to apply to graduate school; intend to pursue a PhD in the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, or engineering; intend to direct their studies toward understanding and solving major, near-term problems facing society; and be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. (Graduate) NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)
(Application deadline: mid-October)
The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full- time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. The GRFP provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education. NSF actively encourages women, persons who are members of groups historically underrepresented in STEM, persons with disabilities, and veterans to apply.
(Grad/Post-doc) Activate Fellowship

The non-profit organization partners with U.S.-based funders and research institutions to support the fellows in their entrepreneurship journey. Fellows receive a yearly living stipend of $80,000 to $110,000 plus a health insurance stipend and travel allowance. The organization facilitates connections between fellows and our broad network of industry executives, investors, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and other experts from academia, industry, government, and finance—any of whom can serve as advisors or partners. (Post-doc) NSF Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowships

The program provides an opportunity for highly qualified, recent doctoral scientists to carry out an integrated program of independent research and education. Fellows may engage in observational, instrumental, theoretical, laboratory or archival data research in any area of astronomy or astrophysics, in combination with a coherent educational plan for the duration of the fellowship. The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. CMDIS - Corning Undergraduate Scholars Program is supporting seven projects and seven bright and talented researchers this year. We received overwhelming applications. The projects will be supervised by RPI faculty and Corning mentors. Our sincere thanks to those who participating in this program by sending proposals and providing academic supervision; submitting applications and enthusiasm; or offering expert opinion to move glass science and engineering research further. CMDIS – Build Your NanoDevice (BYOND) program is starting this week with a new cohort of undergraduate students. Cleanrooms play a crucial role in various industries, ensuring that contamination is minimized or eliminated during the manufacturing and research processes of semiconductors, electronic devices, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, optics, solar panels, and aerospace components. The CMDIS BYOND program aims to provide undergraduate students with specialized training and knowledge in cleanroom operations, enabling them to build a strong foundation in this critical area. The first module is Module 2 (Deposition). Congratulations to all students who were selected by the competitive application process. Learn more.
Jie Lian (MANE), has been named the William Weightman Walker Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). An endowed chaired professorship is among the highest honors bestowed on a Rensselaer faculty member. Read more.
Governor Hochul Announces Consortium of Universities, Businesses, and Industry Leaders to Manage New York’s Fashion Innovation Center. A consortium of six universities, businesses, farmers, fashion industry leaders, and non-profit organizations, led by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been selected to manage New York’s Fashion Innovation Center. The consortium, headquartered in the Capital Region and comprised of RPI, the Fashion Institute of Technology, Hudson Valley Textile Project, Field to Fiber, SUNY Morrisville, and Made X Hudson, will conduct research to bolster the Center’s mission of building a smarter, more sustainable fashion industry.
