Brief.

Last week, we bid farewell to our esteemed colleague Bryant Colwill. He has worked at Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room (MNCR) for 15 years and nine years as Manager / Director of MNCR. His time with MNCR has been marked by dedication, professionalism, and a positive attitude that has enriched our education, research, and work environment. We wish Bryant all the best in his future endeavors and look forward to hearing about his continued success.

Please join us to welcome Zheyu Zhang as our faculty member. Don’t hesitate to reach out for shared research topics and potential collaborations. 

Zheyu Zhang, Assistant Professor, ECSE
Dr. Zheyu Zhang was a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from 2015 to 2018; Lead Power Electronics Engineer of General Electric Research at Niskayuna, NY, USA from 2018 to 2019; and Warren H. Owen – Duke Energy Assistant Professor of Engineering at Clemson University from 2019 to 2023. 
His research interests include wide bandgap-based power electronics characterization and applications. Dr. Zhang is currently the Standard Vice-Chair of IEEE IAS Power Electronics Devices and Components Committee, Associate Editors for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. He is a senior member of IEEE.

BYOND Program Accepts Applications until 09/08.
CMDIS Build Your Own Nano Device Program is now accepting applications for the Fall term. The program is designed to introduce microfabrication and analysis concepts to interested undergraduate students. The program currently offers four modules with each module running over a four-week period. Fall semester modules are Module 2 (Deposition) 09/18-10/13 and Module 1 (Lithography) 10/23-11/17, the application deadline is 09/08. Read more about the program and application requirements.  

CMDIS Facilities Open House is scheduled to 09/13. 
During this event, you can visit the Micro and NanoFabrication Cleanroom (MNCR), Nanoscale Characterization Core (NCC) and Polymer Processing and/or Characterization Core (PPCC) to learn about instrumentation, fabrication and characterization techniques and requirements. Follow e-mail notifications to sign-up for tours. 

Workshop: Practical Quantum Computing 
(31 August, Innovare Advancement Center, Rome, NY)
During this half-day workshop, some real-world customer applications will be presented. Using the Ocean Software Development Kit, a Python programming package, together we will build quadratic models for real optimization problems that can run on both our hybrid solvers and quantum annealers. This hands-on workshop will require participants to have experience with Python programming and an active Leap account. Learn more.

34th Annual Electronics Packaging Symposium 
(6-7 September, SUNY Polytechnic, Albany NY)
Binghamton University, GE Global Research and IBM Research are hosting the 34th annual Electronics Packaging Symposium on September 6-7, 2023 at SUNY Polytechnic at the Albany campus. The focus of the symposium is the needs and the challenges of the electronics industry. Future of Computing for HPC/AI, Flexible, Additive, Wearable and Electronics, Heterogeneous Integration, Photonics Packaging, Thermal Challenges, Advanced Substrates, Power Electronic. Learn more

The Stanford Energy Postdoctoral Fellowship aims to identify, develop, and connect the next generation of energy leaders from science and engineering to policy and economics to address the challenges of the global energy transformation through interdisciplinary approaches. Learn more.

(Graduate) NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) 
(Application deadline: mid-October)
The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full- time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. The GRFP provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education. NSF actively encourages women, persons who are members of groups historically underrepresented in STEM, persons with disabilities, and veterans to apply.

(Grad/Post-doc) WITec Conference Travel Grant
(Application Deadline: 30.August)
The WITec Conference Travel Grant will provide financial support to an outstanding PhD student from the Americas that has conducted cutting edge research using microscopy instrumentation from WITec and intends to present their research at the upcoming SciX 2023 Conference in Sparks, Nevada, US from October 8-13, 2023. To participate in the WITec Conference Travel Grant Program, applicants must submit a copy of an abstract that they prepared for submission to the SciX 2023 Conference as presenting author. Learn more.

(Grad/Post-doc) Activate Fellowship
(Applications: 19.September-17.October)
The non-profit organization partners with U.S.-based funders and research institutions to support the fellows in their entrepreneurship journey. Fellows receive a yearly living stipend of $80,000 to $110,000 plus a health insurance stipend and travel allowance. The organization facilitates connections between fellows and our broad network of industry executives, investors, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and other experts from academia, industry, government, and finance—any of whom can serve as advisors or partners. Learn more.

(Post-doc) Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship
(Letter of Intent Due: 6.September)
The Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chemical Sciences or Chemical Instrumentation Award Program supports advanced research by postdoctoral scholars within the core areas of fundamental chemistry or the development and build of chemical instrumentation. Learn more.

(Post-doc) The American Heart Association Fellowships
(Proposal Deadline: 7.September)
Enhances the training of postdoctoral applicants who are not yet independent. The applicant must be embedded in an appropriate investigative group with the mentorship, support, and relevant scientific guidance of a research mentor. Learn more.

(Faculty) 2024 Alan T Waterman Award Nominations 
(Nomination Period: 17.July – 15.September)
The Alan T. Waterman Award recognizes an outstanding young researcher in any field of science or engineering supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation. The annual award is the nation's highest honor for early-career scientists and engineers. In addition to a medal, the awardee receives a grant of $1,000,000 over a five-year period for scientific research or advanced study in the science and engineering disciplines supported by the National Science Foundation at the institution of their choice. Learn more.

(Faculty) Sloan Research Fellowships 
(Nomination Period: 17.July – 15.September)
The Sloan Research Fellowships seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise. These two-year, $75,000 fellowships are awarded yearly to early career researchers in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field. (Faculty) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Sites
(Proposal Deadline: 27.September)
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. Webinar: Multiphysics Software for Optics Simulation
17.August, 2:00pm 
Electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectrum is both the subject of and a tool for research, and it is fundamental to numerous devices and processes in a wide variety of industries. Simulations are an invaluable way to understand and predict the propagation of light and its interaction with solids, fluids, or particles. In this webinar, an overview of what is possible when using multiphysics software for optics simulation and an introduction to the practical implementation of a ray-optics simulation project will be presented. Register.

Lighting Research Center Conference: 3D Printing for Lighting
(22-23 August, San Diego, CA)
Lighting Research Center (LRC) will kick off the first conference to explore the opportunities and challenges of 3D printing for the lighting industry. The conference will set the stage for discussions about the future of 3D printing for lighting components and systems through more than 30 research and state-of-the-technology presentations, as well as discussion and networking events. The 3D Printing for Lighting conference, to be held as part of SPIE Optics + Photonics 2023, the leading multidisciplinary optical sciences and technology meeting. Learn more.

Workshop: Planning for Success for Junior Faculty

“The Academic Life” Faculty-Development Workshops are designed for those already in or seeking to enter STEM-oriented careers in academia. We use dramatizations followed by discussion to explore critical issues that can confront budding academicians. Topics addressed include promotion and tenure, publication strategies, power dynamics, microaggressions, and the imposter syndrome. The day-long event will happen in campus. Register.

In Case You Have Missed

Jian Shi (MSE) received the prestigious 2023 IEEE Ferroelectrics Young Investigator Award. The award recognizes “the important contributions of young scientists/engineers in reference to their contributions to fundamental research, integration, application, or education.” Recognizing only one or two exceptional scientists in the relevant field each year, this highly competitive award serves as a prestigious accolade for independent scholars under or at the age of 40. Read more. Congratulations!  

Joel Plawsky (CBE) was interviewed by WYNT News Channel 13 about sending his experiments to International Space Station. One of his experiments is focused on the effect of microgravity on change-of-phase heat transfer and especially the operation and stability of heat pipes. The second experiment is aimed at understanding the effects of microgravity and transport on the formation of biofilms. Tune in.Congratulations!
