CMDIS Corning Undergraduate Research Scholars Program

CMDIS Corning Undergraduate Research Scholars Program

We are very pleased to announce the re-launch of the Corning Undergraduate Research Scholars Program. This initiative supports RPI's glass science and engineering research and helps undergraduate students on their academic journey.

At CMDIS, we are committed to facilitating exciting advanced scientific and applied engineering research while nurturing our students and researchers' growth and success. Our long-existing relationship with Corning is now taking another step towards exciting future research collaborations and partnerships.

Here is what the Corning Undergraduate Scholars Program has to offer:

  1. Academic Mentorship: The students will receive mentoring from our faculty and their respective research groups. The academic faculty mentors will offer students research guidance, insights, and strategies while creating new scientific approaches and technologies.
  2. Professional Mentorship: The students and the faculty will meet with Corning mentors to discuss the project's progress while setting new targets, exchanging ideas, executing steps, and planning to receive samples or data. These meetings will help the participating students to build communication and presentation skills in a professional environment that will set them apart in the competitive academic or industry job markets.
  3. Research Experience: The students will participate and contribute to glass science and engineering research while gaining hands-on experience in experimental facilities and accessing to modeling infrastructure that RPI offers. These practical experiences will allow them to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, fostering a deeper understanding of their major.
  4. Networking and Alumni Connections: This program is made possible by RPI's alums at Corning. They also plan to take on roles as professional mentors. Students will gain access to RPI's alum network at Corning, industry leaders, and other program participants. These interactions will create invaluable connections, opening doors to future opportunities.
  5. Research Day / Presentations at Corning: The final presentations of the projects will take place at Corning Inc., Corning, NY. The students and their academic and professional mentors will meet in person for the final presentations to exchange ideas to further their projects at the end of the Fall semester.

We are excited about this program's potential for our faculty and undergraduate students. The program will support 5 (five) undergraduate research projects for the Fall semester. The researchers will be paid hourly, hourly commitments will be determined by the projects. Applicants can expect to work between 6-12 hours per week. The project - applicant selections will be made mid-August.

If you want to participate in this program as an undergraduate researcher, please send your package containing:

  1. resume (details of your academic and research background and skills)
  2. statement of purpose or cover letter (describing your research interests, aspirations)

The deadline to apply for the program is August 1st, Tuesday, 5:00 pm.
