Brief.

Dr. Chao Yang has joined Department of Materials Science and Engineering as Electron Microscopy Lab Manager. He oversees TEM and Versa FIB-SEM under Nanoscale Characterization Core. He received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Dartmouth College and M.S. from Central South University. His research background includes thermal-mechanical processing and microstructural characterization of metallic materials and related molecular dynamic simulations. He has about 20 publications in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Welcome!

“Fellowship Experience at the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office”

Abstract: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have multiple fellowship/internship programs that provide opportunities for highly talented scientists and engineers to support DOE’s mission. The Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) is a technology office within DOE that drives research, manufacturing, and market solutions to make the abundant solar energy resources in the United States more affordable and accessible for Americans. This talk will share details about the ORISE Fellowship experience and what type of work the Fellowship participants support at SETO. 

RPI Graduate Research Symposium Abstract Submission Deadline 
(17.March – Friday)

The RPI’s Graduate Research Symposium will be held on 12.May. Past symposiums have featured keynote speakers, the final round of the Three Minute Thesis academic research competition, podium presentations, poster presentations, career and alumni panels, and networking sessions. APS March Meeting

The American Physical Society's March Meeting brings together scientists and students from around the world to connect and collaborate across academia, industry, and major labs. (Undergraduate) Dr. Vicki L. Schechtman Scholarship 
(Application Deadline: 28.February)
This scholarship will be awarded to a college undergraduate in her Freshman through Junior year whose field of study will be one of the sciences recognized by the National Science Foundation Learn more.

(Undergraduate) Society of Physics Students Scholarships 
(Application Deadline: 15.March)
These awards are made to undergraduate physics students on the basis of scholarship, SPS participation, and additional criteria as outlined in the descriptions. Learn more.

(Undergraduate) The Desk and Derrick Educational Trust Scholarships (Application Deadline: 1.April)
These awards are made to undergraduate students who plan a career in the petroleum, energy or allied industry, or research and development of alternative fuels such as coal, electric, solar, wind hydroelectric, nuclear, and ethanol. Requirements: Completion of at least two years or are currently enrolled in the second year of undergraduate study at an accredited college or university, a grade point average of 3.2 or above on a 4.0 grading system, citizen of the United States or Canada. Learn more.

(Undergraduate/Graduate) Association for Computing Machinery (ACM-W) Computer Science Research Conference Scholarships
(Application Deadline: 1.April)
ACM-W provides support for women undergraduate and graduate students in computer science and related programs to attend computer science research conferences. Learn more.

(Graduate) IBM PhD Fellowship Award Nominations are closing.
(Nomination Deadline: 17.February)
Since 1951, the IBM PhD Fellowship Program has collaborated with faculty, students and universities by recognizing and supporting exceptional PhD students that address focused areas of interest in technology. All nominees must be nominated by a doctoral faculty member; students cannot nominate themselves; must be enrolled full-time in a PhD program over the academic year of the award or forfeit the fellowship; should have two years remaining in their program at the time of nomination so the fellowship can be applied to the last two years of study. Learn more.

(Graduate) Advancing Women in Science Distinguished Doctoral Research Scholarship 
(Application Deadline: 28.February)
Awarded to three AWIS members whose dissertation research project is judged likely to make important and original contributions to their field. This $10,000 award is intended for a pre-doctoral student in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Behavioral Sciences, Mathematics or Engineering who is a woman expecting to graduate within 2 years of the application deadline. Learn more.

(Graduate) 2023 MRS Spring Meeting Early Registration
(Deadline: 09.March)
The MRS Spring Meeting will be held in San Fransicso, CA (25-27 April). It is the key forum to present research to an interdisciplinary and international audience. It provides a window on the future of materials science, and offers an opportunity for researchers—from students and postdoctoral fellows, to Nobel and Kavli Prize Laureates—to exchange technical information and network with colleagues. The AIChE Annual Meeting will be held in Orlando, FL (5-10 November). It is the premier educational forum for chemical engineers interested in innovation and professional growth. (Post-Doc) NASA Postdoctoral Program 
(Application Deadline: 01.March)
The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly-talented U.S. and non-U.S. scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institute. These one- to three-year fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology. NASA has removed the temporary restrictions for non U.S. citizen applicants, annual application cycle is 01.March. Learn more.

(Post-Doc) The Electrochemical Society Battery Division Postdoctoral Associate Research Award

The ECS Battery Division Postdoctoral Associate Research Award was established in 2016 to encourage excellence among postdoctoral researchers in battery and fuel cell research and to recognize recent achievements or contributions to the field that can be expected to have an impact on future research and development. Learn more.

(Post-Doc) Special Postdoctoral Researcher (SPDR) Program, RIKEN (Japan)
(Application Deadline: 13.April)
RIKEN (Japan's largest comprehensive research institution) is currently accepting applications for the FY 2024 Special Postdoctoral Researcher (SPDR) Program, from young, creative, independent researchers who will be a powerful force in furthering RIKEN’s research activities in Mathematical Sciences (pure mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science, information science, artificial intelligence, etc.), Physics I (particle, nuclear, astrophysics, etc.), Physics II ( condensed matter), Chemistry, Biology (cell biology, developmental biology, plant biology, structural biology, microbiology, imaging, measuring, etc.), Medical Science (brain science, psychology, immunology, oncology, genome science, etc.) and Engineering that relate to research being conducted at RIKEN. Learn more.

(Post-Doc) Air Force Science & Technology Fellowship Program Applications opens on March 1. 
(Application Deadline: 1.May)
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine administers postdoctoral and senior fellowship awards at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), and the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) under the Air Force Science & Technology Fellowship Program (AF STFP). The program is seeking highly qualified candidates who are U.S. citizens and hold, or anticipate earning, a doctorate in a variety of fields of science or engineering. Learn more.

(Faculty) NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (S-STEM)
(Application Deadline: 02.March)
The main goal of the S-STEM program is to enable low-income students with academic ability, talent or potential to pursue successful careers in promising STEM fields. Ultimately, the S-STEM program seeks to increase the number of academically promising low-income students who graduate with a S-STEM eligible degree and contribute to the American innovation economy with their STEM knowledge. 
The solicitation has been updated to align with the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 (Public Law. 117-167). Section 10393 of this Act authorizes the Director to make changes in the maximum scholarship amount and length of scholarship support for low-income students in STEM fields. Read more.

(Faculty) NSF Mid-Career Advancement (MCA) Award
(Deadline: 01.March)
The MCA program offers an opportunity for scientists and engineers at the mid-career stage to substantively enhance and advance their research program and career trajectory. Mid-career scientists are at a critical career transition stage where they need to advance their research programs to ensure long-term productivity and creativity but are often constrained by service, teaching, or other activities that limit the amount of time devoted to research. Read more.

In Case You Have Missed

CMDIS Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room (MNCR) team, Bryant Colwill, Kent Way, and David Frey, has participated in the 24th Annual Black Families Technology Awareness Day. The event is designed to introduce educational and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). As a part of the day, our great MNCR team had demonstrations to 20 Grades 9-12 participants into the field of Nanotechnology. Read more.
