CMDIS Annual Research Symposium 2019

The Center for Materials, Devices and Integrated Systems Annual Research Symposium will be held on December 6, 2019 (Friday), between 8:30am-6:00pm, at the Heffner Alumni House.

The event showcases and celebrates research in the Rensselaer Center for Materials, Devices and Integrated Systems (CMDIS). All members of CMDIS and/or users of CMDIS facilities (graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, visiting scientists - if you are not a member we welcome you to join – please contact Jennifer Tedesco at tedesco@rpi.edu) are invited to submit abstracts to share their research through oral, poster presentations and to submit a brief communication.

The program will include oral and poster sessions, brief communication short presentations, an “Art-in-Science” competition, and a networking session. Breakfast, light refreshments and lunch will be provided. The event will be followed by CMDIS Holiday Reception (ID’s required).

Scope
The scope of this symposium is to showcase and celebrate research conducted by CMDIS researchers. Presentations on research in all areas of the physical and chemical sciences and engineering are encouraged.

Submission
Abstract Submission Deadline: November 12, 2019 (Tuesday) at noon. 

General
A scientific committee will review the abstracts and you will be notified in one week after submission deadline for the duration and time of your presentation or dimensions of poster board. All abstracts will be compiled as an abstract booklet and made available to the participants at the symposium.

Submission materials must be prepared as a PDF file for electronic submission.

Submission Categories

Oral presentation: 300 word abstract + 12 min presentation

Poster Presentation: 300 word abstract + poster presentation

Brief Communication: This short paper format provides an opportunity to briefly describe one or more of the following: a new experimental technique / method, a new algorithm or computational method, or an improvement of a computational method or experimental setup. 1000-1200 word short paper + ~5 min (1-2 slide) presentation (TBD)

Awards
Monetary prizes will be awarded at the symposium for three categories.

Art in Science Contest
Visualization of data is a powerful way to convey complex information. In the contest, submissions of artwork that express scientific principles, concepts, ideas, processes and/or structures will be evaluated. The contest is not limited to micrographs or images; any printable artistic representation of scientific data is relevant.

Judging will be based on both scientific significance and artistic impact of the work. All images should have a connection to your scientific research.

Submission information: 
1. All images are required to be electronically submitted as .tiff, .tif, .eps or .pdf file by November 12, 2019 (Tuesday) at noon. Please use this link to submit your work.
2. All images submitted must include a title. 
3. A short description (50 words or less) of the technique used, the object that was imaged, and any special conditions should also be provided
3. You will be communicated about the display of your work.  

Awards:
A monetary prize will be awarded at the symposium for one work.
