Undergraduate Research Opportunities with CMDIS and Corning Inc.

The Rensselaer Center for Materials, Device and Integrated Systems, cMDIS, with support from Corning Incorporated, is inviting applications for multiple undergraduate research scholarships in the broad area of glass researchfor calendar year 2020.

Undergraduates receiving these scholarships should sustain an average of around 5-10 hours research per week through the fall, spring and (as appropriate) summer semesters. Preference will be given to students who are sophomores in academic year 2019-20, and planning to pursue the Arch program in their junior year. The research awards will be supported at a level of up to $3000 to reimburse research costs in the faculty host's lab, to supplement URP funds for student support, to provide laboratory supplies or facility fees and/or travel to a conference by the undergraduate where work is presented on which they are a co-author. Corning will also link the selected scholars to Corning engineers and scientists who will serve as industrial mentors and will be available to discuss the students research, advice on working in industrial research and on possible Arch internship opportunities, and other topics.

Applications should be sent by November 22nd (to hullr2@rpi.edu) and should contain the following information:
i) Your name, department and GPA, and who your research faculty advisor will be (i.e. in whose laboratory / group you would perform the research) – Note you have to find and engage this person yourself.
ii) Whether or not you will be on the Arch in Summer 2020, and then which semester you would spend the Arch semester away,
iii) A half page outline of research project and goals, with specific role you will play in this research.
iv) A brief (short paragraph) of support from your proposed research faculty advisor.

The application should be no more than one page in length.

Sincerely,

Robert Hull, hullr2@rpi.edu
